Rosasharn Farm Programs and Tours
Rosasharn Farm offers a variety of Farm Experiences and Educational Programs promoting a sustainable small farm life style.
We will work with you to design a custom program to suit your interests and needs, accommodating any group, from a single person tutorial to a school-group tour; several hours worth of information to a weekend long "experience of farm life" to an internship. You are welcome to bring a camera and encouraged to take notes. You may ask as many questions during your visit and we will be available to answer your questions via phone or email in the future. Home cooked meals and accommodations can be arranged. Prices vary according to how your program is designed.
Programs:
Basic Farm Tour: This is the perfect program for large groups such as school groups, 4-H clubs, and camp groups. The tour includes a walk and explenation of the animal, soil, fruit, and vegetable parts of the farm- especially how they all fit together! We cater the tour to the groups age/knowledge/interest level. Tours are usually 1 1/2 to 2 hours, but can be longer if your would like to include an interactive componenet such as milking a goat or a simple project in the gardens.
Farm tutorials: 1/2 to full day: covering basic daily goat management. Includes: a tour of the farm, intro to all the goats and our penning systems, feeding and milking. Full day program may include management of poultry, sheep, hogs and livestock guardians.
Birthing tutorial: come and spend a day with us watching the miracle of life unfold. After you book this program you will receive a call announcing that we have a doe in labor. You will arrive to spend the time of labor and delivery with us. Program will cover breeding decisions, pregnancy management, signs of labor, birthing supplies and delivery. If we have a normal delivery you will witness the birth and possibly even catch kids! If the delivery requires assistance you will see how that is handled, including the possibly (hopefully remote) of attending a cesarean cection delivery. Everything will be explained.
Sustainable Homesteading: Learn how to leave as small a footprint on our earth as you can while enjoying the bounty your own land can provide. This program includes integrating small livestock with small scale sustainable vegetable growing, harvesting, and storing. Specific activities will vary with season and your interest, but may inlude work in the gardens, canning, freezing, drying, and fermenting food.
Poultry: raising your own eggs and meat. Management of a small flock will be covered from raising chicks to pasturing poultry and slaughtering and butchering your own meat birds.
Preserving Your Harvest: Basics of canning, drying, fermenting and freezing.
Cheese making #1: This workshop introduces you to basic and easy cheesemaking in your kitchen. We will make a soft cheese, such as chevre or farmers cheese and yogurt.
Cheese making #2: This workshop introduces equipment and a variety of molds, aging and other more complex cheese production methods.
Cheese making #1&2: This workshop will cover the basics of making farmstead cheese and other cultured milk products in your own kitchen. We will use fresh Rosasharn goat milk, store-bought cows milk, and specific cultures and ingredients for producing yogurt, Keifer, and several delicious cheeses. You will be introduced to milk handling protocols, equipment, resources. You will experience the process in all its stages and have the opportunity to taste and take home samples. The course includes a supply catalogue, materials list and your own culture and cheese-cloth to take home with you.
Space is limited to 6 participants per session.
Cost is $65 per participant
